Departmental Overview

Facilities Services works to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the University community to ensure that classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning and research. With over 500 dedicated staff members serving over 10M building square feet and 1100 acres, Facilities Services includes the asset management program, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, the Cal Zero Waste program.

Position Summary

The insulation worker works on campus to complete jobs requiring insulation and/or asbestos abatement.

Responsibilities

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Under supervision, performs all duties related to the craft.
• Maintain a working knowledge of asbestos removal and hazardous waste handling, regulations and procedures.
• Safely handles, properly contains and labels, and follows appropriate emergency procedures as they relate to asbestos material.
• Removes and/or encapsulates asbestos containing materials.
• Replace and/or repair damaged and missing insulation.
• Has the ability to estimate footage and fitting counts for re-insulation projects.
• Correctly selects appropriate insulation for various jobs, taking into consideration project location and heat/or chill factors.
• The work requires setting up and using scaffolding and/or ladders to perform tasks above ground level: has the ability to gain access to work or work places that require the ability to work in hot, isolated, small/tight areas; able to gain access to work or maneuver around obstacles.

ADMINISTRATIVE AND TECHNICAL:

• Supports maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments.
• Coordinate work assignments with Craft Superintendents and/or Leads, Project Managers, Building Inspectors, and campus clients.
• Plans the methods and procedures required to complete abatement, insulation, and repair work on campus.
• Selects correct tools, techniques and methods for handling specific projects by applying thorough knowledge of University, Local, State, and Federal regulations and codes.
• Must be available to respond to emergencies as needed.

SAFETY AND HEALTH AWARENESS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Completes job related tasks in a safe manner by adhering to appropriate safety regulations.
• Immediately stops work in the event of danger to people or property.
• Reports all accidents and /or incidents immediately to the supervisor.
• Attends monthly Safety Tailgate meetings and/or Safety Training meetings.

EMPLOYEE/ SUPERVISOR/ RELATIONS:

• Maintains good working relationships with customers, co-workers and staff.
• Utilizes good judgment in interpersonal communications in situations requiring sensitivity and tact.
• Treats co-workers, leads, and managers with respect and courtesy.
• Promotes a cooperative team environment.

CUSTOMER SERVICE/ RELATIONS:

• Have a good working relationship with and a complete understanding of the role of students, professors, staff and other employees as clients.
• Demonstrates at all times good communication skills with the campus community.
• Responds to requests for service in a timely manner.
• Achieves and supports organizational goals.
• Reports progress or delays and refers major problems to lead or superintendent for resolution and informs customers as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Ability to transmit orders and explain tasks to co-workers.
• Ability to order supplies and/or materials.
• Ability to interact directly with clients defining the needs of the project or program.
• Ability to work from drawing, prints, manuals, and coordinate work.
• Ability to perform all work conforming with University, EH&S, OSHA, and other applicable Federal, State, and local Policies and regulations.
• Ability to work indoors/outdoors in fluctuating and/or extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and to gain access to areas that normally require stairs,
• ladders and scaffolding using specific methods to perform job tasks.
• Must have a thorough comprehension of local, state, and federal regulations.
• Must have four years apprenticeship or equivalent work experience and demonstrated three years journeyman experience in craft related trade.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80.18 (Step 1).

• This is a full-time, Career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
• This is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position.
